These adorable turkey cake pops feature a moist vanilla cake center, salty pretzel feathers, and a smooth chocolate coating. A kid-friendly Thanksgiving treat that’s fun to make and even more fun to eat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box vanilla cake mix (or chocolate)
  • Ingredients listed on the cake mix box (typically eggs, oil, and water)
  • 1/2 cup cream cheese frosting (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 bag pretzel sticks (thin, straight kind)
  • 1 bag candy melts (chocolate or vanilla flavor)
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil or shortening
  • Candy eyes (small round, about 6mm)
  • Orange candy melts or orange M&M’s (for beaks)
  • Red candy melts or red M&M’s (for wattles)
  • Lollipop sticks (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven according to cake mix directions. Prepare batter and bake in a 9×13-inch pan. Let cool completely.
  2. Crumble the cooled cake into fine, even crumbs in a large bowl.
  3. Add 1/2 cup cream cheese frosting to the crumbs. Mix with a spatula, then use hands until mixture holds together like play-dough.
  4. Scoop portions (about 1.5 tablespoons each) and roll into smooth balls. Gently press 3-4 pretzel sticks into the back of each ball, fanning out like feathers. Freeze for 15 minutes.
  5. Melt candy melts with 1 tablespoon coconut oil in a microwave-safe bowl in 30-second intervals, stirring until smooth and runny.
  6. If using lollipop sticks, dip the tip into melted coating, then insert halfway into a cake ball. Dip the entire cake ball into the coating, tap off excess, and place on parchment paper.
  7. While coating is still wet, press two candy eyes onto the front. Add an orange candy for the beak (pointing down) and a red candy for the wattle.
  8. Let cake pops set at room temperature until coating is hard, about 30 minutes.

Notes

Chill cake balls before dipping to prevent crumbling. Thin candy melts with coconut oil for smooth coating. Work in small batches to keep cake balls cold. Use a deep container for dipping. Don’t refrigerate after coating to avoid condensation.
