These mummy wrapped cocktail sausages with mustard eyes are ridiculously easy, absolutely delicious, and have a weird little charm that makes people smile. Perfect for Halloween parties, game days, or lazy Sunday afternoons.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package (12-14 ounces) cocktail sausages (little smoked sausages or mini hot dogs)
  • 1 can (8 ounces) refrigerated crescent roll dough (e.g., Pillsbury)
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard (plus extra for dipping)
  • 1 large egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon water (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together 1 large egg and 1 tablespoon of water until well combined. Set aside.
  3. Carefully unroll the crescent roll dough onto a clean cutting board. Do not separate the triangles; press the perforations together gently with your fingers to seal them into one solid rectangle.
  4. Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut the dough lengthwise into thin strips, about 1/4 inch wide. You should get around 12 to 14 strips.
  5. Take one cocktail sausage and place it at one end of a dough strip. Wrap the strip around the sausage, overlapping slightly as you go, leaving a small gap in the middle for the eyes. Press the end of the dough gently to seal. Repeat with remaining sausages and dough strips.
  6. Place the wrapped sausages on the prepared baking sheet, leaving about an inch of space between each.
  7. Using a pastry brush, gently brush the egg wash over the exposed dough on each mummy, avoiding the exposed sausage area where the eyes will go.
  8. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, until the dough is golden brown and the sausages are heated through.
  9. Remove from the oven and let cool for about 2 minutes. Using a toothpick or small piping tip, dot a tiny amount of Dijon mustard onto the exposed sausage area to create the eyes (two small dots per mummy).
  10. Serve immediately. Best enjoyed warm.

Notes

Keep the dough cold for easier handling. Cut strips evenly for uniform baking. Don’t over-wrap; 2-3 wraps around the sausage is perfect. Leave a gap for the eyes. Use a toothpick for precise mustard dots. For gluten-free, use gluten-free crescent roll dough. For dairy-free, most crescent roll doughs are dairy-free; skip egg wash or use milk/butter. For a spicy version, add sriracha to the mustard. For cheesy mummies, stuff a slit in the sausage with cheese before wrapping. For everything bagel mummies, sprinkle everything bagel seasoning after egg wash. For sweet mummies, use breakfast sausages and drizzle with maple syrup after baking. For vegetarian mummies, use vegetarian sausages or mini cheese sticks (bake 8-10 minutes).
