This copycat Starbucks peppermint mocha is a quick, budget-friendly holiday treat that delivers the same cozy, chocolatey-peppermint magic in just five minutes. Perfect for busy mornings, it’s kid-friendly, customizable, and uses simple pantry ingredients.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups whole milk (or any milk you prefer)
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup strong brewed coffee or 2 shots espresso
  • Whipped cream (for topping)
  • Crushed candy canes or peppermint candies (for topping)
  • Chocolate shavings or drizzle (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Brew your coffee or espresso. If using espresso, pull 2 shots. For regular coffee, brew it strong—about double the usual strength. You need 1/2 cup total. Set it aside while you prepare the milk mixture.
  2. Combine the dry ingredients. In your saucepan, whisk together the cocoa powder and sugar. Make sure there are no lumps.
  3. Add a splash of milk. Pour in about 2 tablespoons of milk and whisk it into the cocoa-sugar mixture until it forms a smooth paste.
  4. Add the remaining milk. Pour in the rest of the milk and whisk everything together. Place the saucepan over medium heat.
  5. Heat gently, whisking often. Warm the milk mixture for about 3-4 minutes, whisking frequently. You want it hot but not boiling—steam should start rising, and tiny bubbles will form around the edges.
  6. Remove from heat and add flavorings. Take the saucepan off the stove. Stir in the peppermint extract and vanilla extract. Taste it here; if you want more peppermint, add another 1/8 teaspoon.
  7. Combine with coffee. Pour the hot coffee or espresso into your mug, then pour the peppermint mocha mixture over it. Stir gently to combine.
  8. Top and serve. Add a generous dollop of whipped cream on top. Sprinkle crushed candy canes and chocolate shavings over the cream. Serve immediately while it’s hot and frothy.

Notes

Don’t boil the milk—heat gently to avoid scorching. Use real peppermint extract for the best flavor. For a dairy-free version, use oat milk and coconut whipped cream. For extra foam, use a milk frother. Adjust coffee strength for different ages; skip coffee for a peppermint hot chocolate.
