These easy homemade apple dumplings use crescent roll dough and a rich cinnamon sugar sauce for a quick, comforting dessert that’s perfect for cozy nights and crowd-pleasing occasions.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji)
  • 1 can (8 oz) refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (for sauce)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar (for sauce)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for sauce)
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease an 8×8 or 9×9 baking dish.
  2. Peel apples, cut in half, and remove cores to create a cavity.
  3. In a small bowl, mix 1/2 cup sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (if using).
  4. Unroll crescent dough and separate into 8 triangles. Gently stretch each piece.
  5. Place an apple half in the center of each dough triangle. Spoon about 1 teaspoon of cinnamon sugar mixture into the cavity. Fold dough corners over the apple and pinch seams to seal. Place seam-side down in the prepared dish.
  6. Drizzle melted butter over dumplings. Sprinkle remaining cinnamon sugar mixture on top.
  7. In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine 1/2 cup butter, 1 cup sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and 1/2 cup water. Stir until butter melts and sugar dissolves. Bring to a gentle simmer, then remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.
  8. Pour warm sauce around the dumplings (not directly on top) so it comes about halfway up the sides.
  9. Bake for 30-35 minutes until dough is golden brown and sauce is thick and bubbling. Halfway through, spoon some sauce over the tops for extra glaze.
  10. Let cool for 5-10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For best results, use firm apples like Granny Smith. Seal dough seams tightly to prevent filling from leaking. If dough browns too quickly, tent with foil for the last 10 minutes. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated in a 350°F oven for 10-15 minutes.
