This cozy maple bourbon sweet potato casserole with pecan streusel is the ultimate holiday side dish. Roasted sweet potatoes are mashed with maple syrup and bourbon, then topped with a buttery pecan streusel for a crunchy, sweet, and salty finish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 pounds sweet potatoes (about 4 large), peeled and cubed into 1-inch pieces
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/3 cup pure maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons bourbon
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream, at room temperature
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (freshly grated if possible)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup pecans, roughly chopped
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar (light or dark)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Peel and cube sweet potatoes into 1-inch chunks.
  2. Place sweet potatoes in a large pot, cover with cold water by about an inch, and add a generous pinch of salt. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and cook for 12-15 minutes until fork-tender. Drain well and let steam dry for a couple of minutes.
  3. Mash the sweet potatoes until mostly smooth, leaving a few small lumps for texture.
  4. Add melted butter, maple syrup, bourbon, heavy cream, beaten eggs, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt to the mashed sweet potatoes. Stir until well combined.
  5. In a medium bowl, combine chopped pecans, flour, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Add cold butter cubes and work into the dry ingredients with your fingers or a pastry cutter until the mixture resembles coarse sand with some pea-sized butter pieces.
  6. Pour the sweet potato mixture into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish and spread evenly. Sprinkle the pecan streusel over the top in an even layer without pressing down.
  7. Bake on the middle rack for 30-35 minutes, until the streusel is golden brown and the filling is bubbly around the edges. If browning too quickly, tent loosely with foil for the last 10 minutes.
  8. Let the casserole cool for at least 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For best results, use room temperature ingredients. Toast pecans in a dry skillet for 2-3 minutes before using to deepen flavor. The casserole can be assembled up to 2 days ahead and refrigerated; add 5-10 minutes to baking time if starting from cold. To freeze, assemble without baking, wrap tightly, and freeze for up to 3 months; thaw overnight in the fridge before baking.
