A simple and budget-friendly hot cocoa bar setup with a rich homemade cocoa base and seven carefully chosen toppings. Perfect for snow days, holiday gatherings, or quiet winter evenings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups whole milk (or oat milk/almond milk for dairy-free)
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (or coconut cream for dairy-free)
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup dark chocolate chips (60% cacao or higher)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • Mini marshmallows
  • 4–5 candy canes, crushed
  • Chocolate shavings
  • Whipped cream
  • Cinnamon sticks
  • Caramel sauce
  • Toasted coconut flakes
  • Sea salt flakes (e.g., Maldon)
  • 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon bourbon or Irish cream (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large saucepan over medium heat, whisk together milk, heavy cream, cocoa powder, and sugar until cocoa powder dissolves (about 2 minutes).
  2. Add dark chocolate chips and whisk until melted (about 2 more minutes). Mixture should be glossy and smooth.
  3. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract and sea salt. Adjust sweetness to taste.
  4. Pour hot cocoa into a slow cooker set to ‘warm’ or a thermos to keep warm. Alternatively, keep in saucepan over lowest heat, stirring occasionally.
  5. Prepare toppings: toast coconut flakes at 350°F for 3-4 minutes; crush candy canes in a ziplock bag with a rolling pin; make chocolate shavings with a vegetable peeler.
  6. Arrange small bowls of toppings on a tray or counter in order: marshmallows, crushed candy canes, chocolate shavings, coconut flakes, caramel sauce, cinnamon sticks, sea salt flakes.
  7. Set out mugs and let guests pour their own cocoa and add toppings as desired.

Notes

Low and slow is key to avoid scorching milk. Toast marshmallows under broiler for 30-45 seconds for a gourmet touch. Crush candy canes in a bag to avoid mess. Warm caramel sauce before serving for better drizzling. Label toppings if allergies are a concern.
