Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 cups whole milk (or 2%)
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 ½ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder (Dutch-processed preferred)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • Marshmallows (regular, mini, or giant)
  • Candy eyeballs (edible)
  • Halloween sprinkles (orange, black, purple)
  • Candy corn
  • Crushed graham crackers or Oreos
  • Whipped cream
  • Chocolate shavings or curls
  • Peppermint sticks or candy canes
  • Caramel sauce or chocolate syrup
  • Pretzel sticks

Instructions

  1. Prep your crockpot (5 minutes): Spray the inside of your slow cooker with non-stick cooking spray or rub with butter.
  2. Combine the liquids (5 minutes): Pour whole milk, heavy cream, and sweetened condensed milk into the crockpot. Whisk until fully incorporated.
  3. Add the dry ingredients (2 minutes): Sprinkle cocoa powder over the liquid and whisk thoroughly. Add chocolate chips, vanilla extract, and salt. Stir well.
  4. Cook on low (2-3 hours): Cover and set to LOW. Cook for 2 to 3 hours, stirring occasionally. Do not cook on HIGH.
  5. Stir and adjust (2 minutes): After 2 hours, whisk until smooth. Taste and adjust sweetness or chocolate flavor as desired.
  6. Set up your toppings bar (15 minutes): Arrange toppings in small bowls with serving spoons. Label creatively if desired.
  7. Serve and enjoy (ongoing): Switch crockpot to WARM. Let guests ladle hot chocolate into mugs and add toppings. Stir every hour to prevent skin.

Notes

For a dairy-free version, use oat milk or canned coconut milk, dairy-free chocolate chips, and vegan sweetened condensed milk. For an adult version, add ½ cup peppermint schnapps, Irish cream, or bourbon after melting. Leftovers keep in the fridge for 3-4 days; reheat gently. Can be frozen for up to 3 months.
