A minty, rich hot chocolate with a vibrant green color, perfect for Halloween parties. This easy 10-minute recipe is a crowd-pleasing showstopper that comes together with simple ingredients.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups whole milk (950ml)
  • 1 cup heavy cream (240ml)
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (50g)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (100g)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • A few drops green gel food coloring
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Whipped cream (for garnish)
  • Crushed candy canes or peppermint (for garnish)
  • Chocolate shavings (for garnish)
  • Halloween sprinkles (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a large saucepan or Dutch oven, whisk together the cocoa powder, granulated sugar, and salt until no lumps remain.
  2. Add about 1/2 cup of the milk and whisk vigorously to form a smooth paste (slurry).
  3. Pour in the remaining milk and heavy cream, whisking until well combined.
  4. Place the pot over medium heat and stir frequently. Bring to a gentle simmer (small bubbles around the edges), about 5-7 minutes. Do not boil.
  5. Remove from heat. Stir in the peppermint extract and 2-3 drops of green gel food coloring until the color is evenly distributed.
  6. Taste and adjust sweetness or mint flavor as desired.
  7. Ladle into mugs and top with whipped cream, crushed candy canes, chocolate shavings, or Halloween sprinkles.

Notes

Use peppermint extract, not syrup, to avoid a watery drink. Gel food coloring is recommended for vibrant color without thinning. For parties, keep warm in a slow cooker on the ‘warm’ setting. Do not boil the milk to prevent scorching.
