A quick and easy no-bake dessert dip made with boxed cake mix and cream cheese frosting, shaped like a Christmas tree and covered in festive sprinkles. Perfect for holiday parties and classroom celebrations.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box (15.25 oz) white or vanilla cake mix
  • 1 container (16 oz) cream cheese frosting
  • 1/2 cup green sanding sugar or green sprinkles
  • 1/4 cup red sprinkles or red nonpareils
  • 1/4 cup white sprinkles or white nonpareils
  • 1–2 tablespoons milk (optional)
  • Assorted cookies, pretzels, and fruit for dipping

Instructions

  1. Prepare your workspace: Clear a counter or table where you can work. Gather all your ingredients and equipment.
  2. Empty the cake mix into the large mixing bowl. Don’t sift it—the lumps actually add texture to the dip. If there are any large clumps, break them up with your fingers or the back of a spoon.
  3. Add the cream cheese frosting: Scoop the entire container of frosting into the bowl with the cake mix. Use a spatula to scrape every last bit out.
  4. Mix thoroughly: Stir the cake mix and frosting together until fully combined. This takes about 2-3 minutes of steady mixing. The mixture will start off looking crumbly, but keep going. You’re looking for a smooth, uniform consistency with no dry patches of cake mix. The dip should be thick but spreadable—like a very dense frosting. If it seems too thick, add milk one tablespoon at a time until it reaches your desired consistency.
  5. Let the dip rest: Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a lid and let it sit for 5 minutes. During this time, the cake mix absorbs moisture from the frosting, creating a smoother, more cohesive texture.
  6. Shape the dip into a Christmas tree: Transfer the dip to your serving platter. Use a spatula to shape it into a triangle or Christmas tree shape. Don’t worry about perfection—the sprinkles will cover any imperfections. I usually make mine about 1/2 inch thick at the base and tapering to a point at the top. If the dip is too sticky to shape, wet your spatula slightly with water.
  7. Add the green sprinkles: Generously sprinkle the green sanding sugar or green sprinkles over the entire tree shape. Use your fingers or a small spoon to press the sprinkles gently into the dip so they stick. Don’t be shy—you want a thick, even coating that completely covers the dip.
  8. Decorate with red and white sprinkles: Add red sprinkles to represent ornaments. Place them randomly or in a pattern—I like to cluster a few at the bottom and scatter them upward. Then add white sprinkles to represent snow. You can also add a star-shaped sprinkle or a yellow candy at the top of the tree for the star.
  9. Add a ‘trunk’ (optional but cute): Use a pretzel stick or a piece of chocolate at the bottom of the tree to represent the trunk. This makes the tree shape more obvious and adds a salty crunch that balances the sweetness.
  10. Serve immediately or refrigerate: The dip can be served right away, or you can cover it and refrigerate for up to 2 hours before serving. If refrigerating, let it sit at room temperature for 10 minutes before serving to soften slightly. The dip is best at room temperature—it’s creamier and easier to scoop.

Notes

Let the dip rest for 5 minutes after mixing to allow the cake mix to hydrate fully for a smoother texture. For best results, use Betty Crocker or Duncan Hines cake mix and Pillsbury cream cheese frosting. The dip can be made ahead (without sprinkles) up to 2 days in advance. Add sprinkles fresh just before serving for maximum crunch.
