A quick and easy hot buttered rum recipe that delivers maximum flavor with minimum effort. Made with simple pantry ingredients, this warm and comforting drink is perfect for cold nights and holiday gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar, packed
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 ounces dark rum
  • 6 to 8 ounces hot water
  • 1 cinnamon stick (for stirring)
  • Whipped cream (optional, for topping)
  • Freshly grated nutmeg (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Start your water heating. Fill your kettle or pot with water and set it to boil.
  2. Make the butter paste. In your mug or a small bowl, combine 2 tablespoons of softened unsalted butter, 2 tablespoons of packed brown sugar, 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg, 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves (if using), 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Use a fork to mash everything together until it forms a smooth, thick paste.
  3. Add the rum. Pour 2 ounces of dark rum directly into the mug over the butter paste. Give it a quick stir with your fork to combine.
  4. Pour in the hot water. Once your water is steaming hot (just off the boil), pour 6 to 8 ounces into the mug. Stir everything together with a spoon or your cinnamon stick until the butter is fully melted and the mixture looks smooth and golden.
  5. Add the cinnamon stick. Drop a fresh cinnamon stick into the mug. Give it one more gentle stir with the stick.
  6. Top and serve. If desired, add a dollop of whipped cream on top and a light sprinkle of freshly grated nutmeg or cinnamon. Let cool for a minute before serving.

Notes

Soften your butter properly for best results. Don’t skip the salt—it balances the sweetness. Use boiling water, not hot tap water. Stir with the cinnamon stick to release its oils. Make a batch of butter paste and store in the fridge for quick assembly later.
