This easy slow cooker hot cocoa bar is the perfect weeknight treat. Set it and forget it, then let everyone build their own perfect mug with marshmallows, whipped cream, and more.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups whole milk
  • 1 ½ cups heavy cream
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • ¼ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (optional)
  • Mini marshmallows (for topping)
  • Whipped cream (for topping)
  • Chocolate shavings or curls (for topping)
  • Crushed candy canes or peppermint bits (for topping)
  • Caramel sauce or chocolate syrup (for topping)
  • Toasted marshmallows (for topping)
  • Sea salt flakes (for topping)
  • Cinnamon sticks or star anise (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the cocoa powder, sugar, and salt to prevent clumps.
  2. Pour the milk and heavy cream into the slow cooker. Add the cocoa mixture, vanilla extract, and the cinnamon stick. If using, add the chocolate chips. Whisk until the cocoa powder is mostly dissolved.
  3. Cover and cook on LOW for 2 to 3 hours. Stir once or twice during cooking if desired.
  4. Remove the cinnamon stick before serving.
  5. While the cocoa cooks, arrange toppings in small bowls for the hot cocoa bar.
  6. Ladle the hot cocoa into mugs and let everyone customize their own with the toppings.

Notes

For best results, use whole milk and Dutch-processed cocoa powder. Whisk dry ingredients first to avoid lumps. Keep the slow cooker on ‘warm’ after cooking to maintain temperature. Stir before each serving. Toppings should be kept separate and added individually.
