This easy warm apple crisp features a crunchy oat streusel topping over soft, spiced apples. Ready in under 30 minutes, it’s the perfect last-minute dessert for weeknights or gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 medium apples, peeled, cored, and sliced into ¼-inch thick pieces
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup packed brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 6 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with granulated sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour until evenly coated.
  3. Pour the apple mixture into an ungreased 8×8-inch baking dish and spread into an even layer.
  4. In a medium bowl, combine oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Whisk together.
  5. Add cold butter cubes to the dry mixture. Using a pastry cutter, two forks, or your fingers, work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized butter pieces.
  6. Sprinkle the streusel evenly over the apples. Do not press down.
  7. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until the filling is bubbly and the streusel is golden brown.
  8. Let cool for at least 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

For a gluten-free version, swap all-purpose flour with a 1:1 gluten-free baking blend. For a dairy-free version, use cold coconut oil or plant-based butter. Let the crisp rest for 5 minutes after baking to allow the filling to set. If the streusel browns too quickly, tent with foil for the last 10 minutes.
