This quick and easy homemade cranberry orange sauce with fresh ginger is the perfect holiday side dish. It comes together in under 20 minutes with simple ingredients and is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 ounces (340 grams) fresh cranberries
  • 3/4 cup (150 grams) granulated sugar
  • 1 large navel orange (zest and juice)
  • 1-inch piece (about 15 grams) fresh ginger, peeled and grated
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) water
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Wash the orange thoroughly. Zest the orange using a Microplane, being careful to avoid the white pith. You should have about 1 tablespoon of zest. Cut the orange in half and juice it to get about 1/4 cup (60 ml) of fresh juice. Set the zest and juice aside.
  2. Peel the ginger using the edge of a spoon. Grate it finely on a Microplane or the small holes of a box grater. You should have about 1 tablespoon of grated ginger.
  3. In a medium saucepan, combine the fresh cranberries, granulated sugar, orange juice, grated ginger, water, and a pinch of salt. Stir well. Do not add the orange zest yet.
  4. Place the saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring the mixture to a boil, about 3-4 minutes, until the cranberries start to pop. Reduce the heat to medium-low and let it simmer for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened and coats the back of a spoon.
  5. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir in the reserved orange zest. Let the sauce cool in the pan for about 10 minutes.
  6. Transfer the sauce to a storage container or serving bowl. The sauce will continue to thicken as it cools. Serve warm, at room temperature, or chilled.

Notes

This sauce can be made ahead of time and actually tastes better after a day or two in the fridge. For a spiced version, add a cinnamon stick and two star anise while simmering. For a maple version, replace the sugar with 1/2 cup maple syrup and reduce water to 1/4 cup. For a low-sugar version, use a sugar substitute or reduce sugar to 1/4 cup. The sauce can be frozen for up to three months.
