Kid-Friendly Frankenstein Guacamole Bites: Best Halloween Appetizer - featured image

These Frankenstein guacamole bites are the perfect Halloween appetizer—clever without being complicated. Made with creamy guacamole piped onto tortilla chips and decorated with black olives and sour cream, they come together in under 20 minutes and are a guaranteed crowd-pleaser.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 ripe avocados
  • 1 lime, juiced (about 2 tablespoons)
  • 1/4 cup finely diced red onion
  • 1 small jalapeño, seeded and minced
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 can (6 oz) sliced black olives
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 1 bag sturdy tortilla chips (such as Tostitos Scoops)

Instructions

  1. Make the guacamole base: Cut the avocados in half, remove the pits, and scoop the flesh into a medium mixing bowl. Add the lime juice right away. Mash with a fork or potato masher until smooth but still slightly chunky.
  2. Add the flavor: Stir in the diced red onion, minced jalapeño, chopped cilantro, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
  3. Prepare your piping bag: Scoop the guacamole into a zip-top bag. Squeeze all the air out, seal it, and snip off about 1/2 inch from one corner.
  4. Pipe onto chips: Arrange tortilla chips on a serving platter in a single layer. Pipe a generous mound of guacamole onto each chip, about the size of a walnut, using a circular motion from the outside in.
  5. Add the monster hair: Arrange a few sliced black olives on top of each guacamole mound to look like Frankenstein’s hair (3-4 slices per chip in a line across the top third).
  6. Add the eyes: Place two olive slices side by side in the middle of the guacamole for eyes. Optionally, add a tiny dot of sour cream in the center of each olive slice.
  7. Add the bolts: Place one olive slice on each side of the guacamole mound near the bottom for neck bolts.
  8. Pipe the sour cream details: Put sour cream in a small zip-top bag, snip a tiny corner, and pipe a mouth onto each monster (zigzag or straight line). Optionally pipe eyebrows or a scar.
  9. Serve immediately: Best eaten within an hour of assembly.

Notes

Assemble no more than an hour before serving to prevent chips from getting soggy and guacamole from browning. For best results, use scoop-shaped tortilla chips. To keep guacamole from browning, press plastic wrap directly onto the surface before storing. Let kids decorate for extra fun.
