Lighter Mummy Hot Dogs with Easy Crescent Wraps

A lighter twist on classic mummy hot dogs, using crisp romaine lettuce instead of crescent dough for a fresher, healthier Halloween treat. Quick to make and kid-approved, these mummy hot dogs are perfect for parties or a fun dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4–6 turkey hot dogs (e.g., Applegate or Hebrew National)
  • 4–6 large romaine lettuce leaves (outer leaves)
  • 2–3 tablespoons reduced-fat cream cheese, softened
  • Yellow mustard (for the eyes)
  • Optional: 1 can (8-count) crescent roll dough (e.g., Pillsbury Reduced-Fat)

Instructions

  1. For the lettuce-wrapped mummies: Bring a small pot of water to a boil. Add the turkey hot dogs and cook for 3-4 minutes until heated through. Drain and set aside to cool slightly.
  2. Wash and pat dry 4-6 large romaine leaves. Trim off the thick white stem at the base of each leaf.
  3. Spread a thin layer of softened cream cheese over the inside of each lettuce leaf.
  4. Place a cooked hot dog at one end of a lettuce leaf and roll it up tightly, tucking in the sides. The cream cheese will help the lettuce stick.
  5. Use a toothpick or the tip of a knife to dab two small dots of yellow mustard on one end of each mummy for the eyes.
  6. Chill the wrapped mummies in the fridge for 5 minutes before serving. Serve cold or at room temperature.
  7. For the crescent roll mummies (optional): Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  8. Unroll the crescent dough and separate into 8 triangles. Cut each triangle into 3-4 thin strips using kitchen scissors.
  9. Wrap 2-3 strips of dough around each hot dog, leaving a small gap at the top for the eyes. Press ends to seal.
  10. Bake for 12-14 minutes until golden brown. Let cool slightly, then add mustard eyes.

Notes

For the lettuce version, pat the leaves dry thoroughly to prevent sogginess. Use room-temperature cream cheese for easy spreading. If making both versions, cook all hot dogs at once and assemble lettuce wraps while crescent mummies bake. For a gluten-free option, use gluten-free crescent dough or stick with lettuce wraps.
