This Spooky Monster Guacamole Dip is a fun and delicious Halloween appetizer that combines creamy, zesty guacamole with sour cream ‘slime’ and olive eyeballs. It’s quick to make, uses simple ingredients, and is sure to be a crowd-pleaser at any Halloween party.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 ripe avocados
  • 1 medium lime, juiced (about 2 tablespoons)
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped red onion
  • 1 small jalapeño, seeded and minced
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1 Roma tomato, diced small (optional)
  • 1/2 cup sour cream (full-fat recommended)
  • 1 can (6 oz) black olives, drained (12–15 whole olives)
  • 1 small carrot, peeled and cut into thin strips
  • 1/2 red bell pepper, sliced into strips
  • Tortilla chips (Tostitos Scoops recommended)

Instructions

  1. Prep your ingredients first. Dice the red onion, mince the jalapeño, chop the cilantro, and dice the tomato. Set them aside.
  2. Cut the avocados. Slice each avocado lengthwise around the pit, twist to separate, and remove the pit. Scoop the flesh into a large mixing bowl using a spoon. Discard the skins and pits.
  3. Mash the avocados. Using a fork or potato masher, mash the avocado to your desired consistency (mostly smooth with a few small chunks).
  4. Add the flavorings. Squeeze the lime juice over the mashed avocado. Add the salt, cumin, red onion, jalapeño, cilantro, and diced tomato. Stir gently until evenly distributed. Taste and adjust salt or lime if needed.
  5. Shape the monster. Transfer the guacamole to a serving platter. Using the back of a spoon, spread it into an oval or round shape about 1/2-inch thick.
  6. Create the monster features. Dollop sour cream in two spots for ‘eye whites’ (about 1 tablespoon each). Place a black olive in the center of each sour cream dollop to form the pupils. Use carrot strips as horns or antennae sticking out from the top. Arrange red bell pepper strips to form a jagged mouth.
  7. Add extra details (optional). Use a small knife to carve a zigzag pattern into the bell pepper mouth. Place a few extra olive slices around the face for ‘warts’.
  8. Serve immediately. Arrange tortilla chips around the monster face, sticking them into the guacamole at the edges.

Notes

For best results, use ripe but firm avocados. Press plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the guacamole if not serving immediately to prevent browning. Assemble the monster face just before serving to keep the sour cream from weeping. If you need a dairy-free version, substitute sour cream with cashew cream or thick vegan yogurt.
