These spooky spider web chocolate chip cookie bars are the Halloween dessert you didn’t know you needed. They’re quick enough for a last-minute party, impressive enough to steal the show, and delicious enough that you’ll find yourself making them even when it’s not October.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
  • 1 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup white chocolate melting wafers (or white chocolate chips mixed with 1 teaspoon coconut oil)
  • Black gel food coloring (optional, for spider)
  • 2 candy eyes (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line your 9×13-inch pan with parchment paper, leaving some overhang on the long sides. Lightly grease the parchment with cooking spray or a little butter.
  2. Melt the butter in a microwave-safe bowl in 30-second intervals, stirring between each, until just melted. Let it cool for about 5 minutes.
  3. In your large mixing bowl, whisk together the melted butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until smooth, about 1 minute.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, whisking well after each addition. Then stir in the vanilla extract until glossy and smooth.
  5. Sprinkle the flour, baking soda, and salt evenly over the wet mixture. Fold together with a rubber spatula until just combined (a few streaks of flour are okay).
  6. Fold in the chocolate chips with a few gentle strokes. Reserve about 1/4 cup of chips to press on top later.
  7. Transfer the dough to the prepared pan and press into an even layer. Let it rest in the pan for 5 minutes.
  8. Bake for 22-25 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the center looks set but still slightly soft. A toothpick inserted in the center should come out with a few moist crumbs.
  9. Let the bars cool in the pan on a wire rack for at least 20 minutes before decorating.
  10. While the bars cool, prepare the spider web decoration. Melt the white chocolate wafers according to package directions (usually 30-second intervals in the microwave, stirring between). Transfer to a squeeze bottle or piping bag.
  11. Create the spider web: Starting from the center of the bars, pipe a spiral of white chocolate working outward. Then, using a toothpick, drag lines from the center to the edges at regular intervals, like spokes on a wheel.
  12. For the spider, pipe a small circle of white chocolate, then add eight tiny legs extending outward. Place two candy eyes on the body. If using black gel food coloring, color a small amount of white chocolate for a more realistic spider.
  13. Let the decoration set completely before cutting into bars, about 30 minutes. Use the parchment handles to lift the whole block out, then slice into squares with a sharp knife.

Notes

For the best texture, make sure your eggs are at room temperature. Let the dough rest in the pan for 5 minutes before baking for a chewier center. If using a glass pan, reduce oven temperature by 25°F and expect a slightly longer baking time. The bars taste even better the next day. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days. Freeze undecorated bars for up to 3 months.
