A festive Halloween appetizer featuring a creamy homemade ranch dip surrounded by fresh vegetables, all arranged in a spiderweb design that’s both impressive and easy to make.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 23 tablespoons buttermilk
  • 1 tablespoon dried dill
  • 1 tablespoon dried parsley
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 1/4 cup sour cream (for spiderweb)
  • Handful of black olives, sliced
  • Chives or green onion tops, thinly sliced
  • 1 bunch carrots, peeled and cut into sticks
  • 45 celery stalks, cut into sticks
  • 23 bell peppers (assorted colors), sliced into strips
  • 1 large cucumber, sliced into rounds or sticks
  • 1 pint cherry tomatoes
  • 1 cup broccoli florets
  • 1 cup cauliflower florets
  • 1 cup sugar snap peas

Instructions

  1. In a medium mixing bowl, combine softened cream cheese, sour cream, and mayonnaise. Blend until smooth and creamy. Add buttermilk one tablespoon at a time until the dip reaches a thick but dippable consistency.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together dried dill, dried parsley, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, and cayenne (if using). Add to the dip base and stir until fully incorporated. Refrigerate while prepping vegetables.
  3. Wash and dry all vegetables. Peel carrots and cut into sticks. Cut celery into sticks. Slice bell peppers into strips. Slice cucumber into rounds. Keep cherry tomatoes whole. Cut broccoli and cauliflower into bite-sized florets. Trim sugar snap peas.
  4. Place the bowl of ranch dip in the center of a large round platter. Arrange vegetables around the bowl in concentric circles, starting with longer vegetables like carrots and celery as spokes, then filling in with other vegetables.
  5. Spoon 1/4 cup sour cream into a piping bag or zip-top bag. Snip a tiny corner off the bag. Pipe thick circles of sour cream around the edge of the dip bowl, then additional circles about 1 inch apart outward onto the vegetables.
  6. Using a toothpick or skewer, drag from the center outward through the sour cream circles at each hour position (like a clock) to create a spiderweb pattern.
  7. Place two black olive slices in the center of the dip for the spider’s body. Arrange chive or green onion slices around the body to create eight legs.
  8. Cover the platter loosely with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving.

Notes

Soften cream cheese to room temperature to avoid lumps. Do not overmix the dip. Blanch broccoli and cauliflower for 30 seconds if serving picky eaters. Use a large enough platter to spread vegetables out. Practice the web technique on parchment paper first. Make extra dip for a crowd.
