Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 ripe bananas, mashed (about 1 cup)
  • 1 cup pumpkin purée (not pumpkin pie filling)
  • 1 ¾ cups whole wheat pastry flour (or all-purpose flour)
  • ½ cup granulated sugar (or coconut sugar)
  • ¼ cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • ⅓ cup coconut oil, melted (or vegetable oil)
  • ¼ cup Greek yogurt (or sour cream)
  • 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • For the cream cheese swirl:
  • 6 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×5-inch loaf pan with parchment paper, leaving overhang on the long sides.
  2. In a large bowl, mash the bananas with a fork until mostly smooth with a few small lumps.
  3. Add the pumpkin purée, melted coconut oil, Greek yogurt, eggs, brown sugar, granulated sugar, and vanilla extract to the bananas. Whisk until smooth and combined.
  4. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the whole wheat pastry flour, pumpkin pie spice, cinnamon, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Pour the dry ingredients into the wet mixture. Fold gently with a spatula until just combined—do not overmix. A few small lumps are fine.
  6. In a small bowl, beat the softened cream cheese with powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk until smooth and spreadable.
  7. Pour half of the banana bread batter into the prepared loaf pan and spread evenly. Drop spoonfuls of the cream cheese mixture over the batter, then pour the remaining batter on top.
  8. Use a butter knife or skewer to gently swirl the cream cheese into the batter in a figure-eight pattern, about 5-6 passes.
  9. Bake for 55-65 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean (except for possible melted cream cheese). The top should be golden brown and spring back when lightly touched.
  10. Let the bread cool in the pan for 15 minutes, then lift it out using the parchment paper and transfer to a cooling rack. Cool completely before slicing.

Notes

For best results, use room temperature ingredients. If your cream cheese swirl sinks, thicken the mixture with a little more powdered sugar or chill it before swirling. Let the bread cool completely before slicing to prevent crumbling.
